Tree Removal Permit
Brimbank takes pride in its rich cultural landscape, shaped by a multitude of significant and historical trees. These trees hold historical, botanical, scientific, social, cultural, commemorative, and aesthetic value, and we are dedicated to preserving them for future generations.
A Local Law permit will be required before pruning or removing a significant tree. Any work carried out within 2.0 metres of a significant tree will also require a special permit, in addition to any Planning or Building Permit that may be required.
Significant Tree Register: Our Significant Tree Register comprises approximately 1000 trees owned or maintained by the Council. This register is continuously updated as we identify new significant trees or when existing ones naturally reach the end of their lifecycle.
Criteria for Significance: To determine what makes a tree significant, we engaged with the community to establish criteria. These include horticultural, botanical, and environmental value, historical and commemorative significance, location or context within the landscape, cultural relevance, age, size, unique growth patterns, and exceptional representation of the species.
What is a Significant Tree: Significant trees can be individual trees or groups that meet the aforementioned criteria.
Examples of Significant Trees: Some noteworthy examples include the Allepo Pine on the Old Calder Highway in Keilor, a descendant of the original Lone Pine at Gallipoli, and the tree at 17 Willey Street, Sunshine North, significant due to its size as one of the only large trees in that area.
Examples of Groups of Significant Trees: Groupings, such as those in the H.V. McKay Memorial Gardens, Old Calder Highway in Keilor, and Waterfield Park in Cairnlea, hold historical context and contribute significantly to their respective landscapes.
Management of Significant Trees: We actively manage significant trees through routine inspections, independent assessments by arborists to evaluate their condition and lifespan, and succession planting to ensure that when a tree eventually reaches the end of its life, others are already growing to fill its place.
Future Management: A new Municipal Tree Policy, expected to be developed in 2019/2020, will further guide the management of significant trees. This policy will replace the Street Tree Policy 2010 and complement the Urban Forest Strategy 2016.
Adding a Tree to the Register: If you believe a tree meets the criteria for significance, please contact our Parks Services Unit Manager at 9249 4000 or info@brimbank.vic.gov.au. We value community input in identifying and preserving these important trees.
