Tree Removal Permit
A council permit will be required to remove a tree if the tree:
is considered a canopy trees (see definition below), or
has conditions specified in the land title.
Canopy trees
Canopy trees have a circumference of:
110cm or more, measured at 1.5m above ground level; or
150cm or more at ground level.
If the tree has multiple stems, the circumference is the total of the stems.
If a canopy tree is dead, you will still need to apply for a permit and the council will send one of their arborists to site to confirm the status of the tree.
You don’t need a permit to prune a canopy tree as long as the work is carried out according to the relevant Australian Standards.
Neighbouring trees
As a neighbouring property owner, you can prune any leaves or branches that hang over onto your property. This must be done at your own cost and you must not damage the tree.
